"Built in 1703, Heidelberg’s oldest and most famous tavern has certainly had some illustrious patrons. Mark Twain, Marilyn Monroe, and John Wayne are just a few of the celebrities who drank and dined here—a fact that’s proven by the many photos of famous faces hanging on the walls. Notable clientele notwithstanding, Zum Roten Ochsen is all about simplicity. Still run by the same family that opened it hundreds of years ago, it serves rich local dishes, from goulash soup and bratwurst to Swabian Maultaschen (meat-filled ravioli) and Käsespätzle (cheese-covered noodles), as well as fresh herring, boiled beef, and several vegetarian options. Also on offer is a drinks menu heavy on regional wines and local Heidelberg beer, all of which are complemented by the restaurant’s old-fashioned interior, friendly service, and live piano player in the evenings."
The food is delicious, the portions are big too. There is a pianist playing piano in the restaurant at night time. The restaurant wall and ceiling is full of decorations. The walkway to the table is abit narrow. The toilet is very clean.

What a fantastic spot. The atmosphere was perfect; with old hunting trophies on the walls, Steins on display and tons of pictures adorning the walls.
The food was absolutely delicious! I had the braised Ox-Cheeks. One of the best meals I've had in a long time, hands down!! The meat was delicious and tender, the dumplings were the perfect consistency and texture (not over cooked or gummy). The cabbage was really delightful as well. All in all, I have zero bad things to say; food was great, beer was cold, wine was nice, and the prices are reasonable for such a delicious meal.
Staff were nice as well. I came in quite late for food (by German standards) and they were still very accommodating. Even though the staff spoke english, I've been trying to practice my German and the lady was very patient with me.
For sure this is a GO-TO while in Heidelberg!

Owner went out of his way to accommodate myself and son for lunch (usually reserved for pre booked private group dining only). The atmosphere exuded heritage and german authenticity only possible from 187 yrs of evolution and preservation.
The food was excellent and the taste balanced in showcasing 6 generations of culinary know-how and highlighting the essence of the dish that the chef wanted to showcase.
This is my benchmark taste of german cuisine.
Pricing was very reasonable considering the full experience delivered.

Owner let us walk-in even though it was only open for prebooking and dinner. Food tasted high quality and traditional. Quintessential German. Decor is authentic and full of heritage.
P.s. All these reviews saying the service is unfriendly is completely unfounded. I came as a Asian tourist without any prebooking. The family was having their own staff meal. However, they still let us in and quickly served high quality food to us. The owner even went through the pictures on the wall and the heritage of the restaurant.
All the racist and unfriendly reviews are utter nonsense!!!

Fantastic restaurant with very friendly staff. The service was great and the food as well. The menu is short, but what they offer is delicious. The interior is very different, with old tables, carved with initials and names. Live piano music as well. I have been to Heidelberg many times but this was my first visit. I will come back for sure.

Great old pub style restaurant. The interior is amazing and each wall is covered in pictures, horns, cups. We had the dark lager which was really tasty. The food was good and the staff were friendly. Great place for an evening in Heidelberg.

From the first moment I walked into the place, the waitresses saw me like I was different ( 'cause I am mestiza ? )
Next my partner ( he was white american ) said, " we want to eat ", fortunately he saw what I saw, and felt what I felt.
Two people having issues ? I dont think so ( to the owner )
The food was good. The place is a traditional German restaurant.

Very nice and stylish restaurant that exists more than 300 years. Food is local, quite tasty. Portion really big. Good local beer. Piano player jamming all night makes it even moře interesting. I do totally recommend this place.
